Description
These kraft paper rolls are made from strong brown paper ideal for wrapping when strength and durability are important, they are also great for presentation purposes.
Pure ribbed kraft paper is made from unbleached pure wood pulp. This produces a very strong tear resistant and puncture proof wrapping material as the fibres are quite long and bond together very well. We stock pure kraft paper in 5 different sizes, in 70gsm thickness on rolls which are a really handy, compact, 250m long. They can be used with our kraft paper roll dispensers which can be found here.
Kraft paper is made from wood, just like most other paper types. The term “Kraft” describes the process of turning wood into wood pulp, essentially by pressure-cooking softwood chips in a mixture of strong alkaline chemicals.
These chemicals, notably sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphide, separate the cellulose (which is useful) and lignin (not so useful) that make up the wood fibres. Think about when you cook noodles, at first the noodles are hard and packed tightly together, just like the wood. As you apply hot water, the noodles become soft and separate, that’s kind of what happens here but on a microscopic level.
The kraft paper slurry is then refined, washed and formed into thin paper sheet through huge pressurised rollers. As the kraft paper gets drawn out and dried, it is rolled onto colossal jumbo or master reels, ready for cutting down. At this point, we have a light-brown cellulose pulp with interlocking fibres, otherwise known as brown pure kraft paper.
Our pure kraft paper is 100% recyclable with other paper waste and is produced with wood from sustainable forests. This pure ribbed kraft paper can also be composted in garden waste compost bins or heaps.
We also have a range of kraft paper made from recycled paper which is a great option if you are looking for a more sustainable wrapping paper.
WHAT IS KRAFT PAPER?
Kraft paper, or known by some as “craft paper”, was named after the German word kraft, meaning “strength,” which refers to a specific type of pulping process that ensures strong paper. Developed in 1879 by Carl F. Dahl, a patent was issued five years later. The first kraft paper-making company opened its doors in Sweden in 1890. Combined with the invention of the recovery boiler in the early 1930s, kraft paper production entered a new, more efficient and environmentally-friendly stage. With the recovery boiler, kraft paper manufacturers now reach a nearly closed-loop production cycle, meaning they recover and reuse almost all of the water and major chemicals used in the kraft pulping process. By the 1940s, kraft paper producers surpassed traditional sulphite process manufacturers, making them the dominant manufacturing type for wood pulp in the world. Kraft paper is durable, a machine-made paper that’s made mostly from wood pulp. Unlike other papers, kraft can use all types of wood and non-wood for manufacture, including resinous pine, bamboo, and agri-residues. Kraft paper products are known for their thickness and strength and, consequently, are coarse, have a high tear resistance and contain highly-oriented fibers. There are benefits to packaging with kraft paper. Since it is lightweight, kraft wrapping paper keeps shipping costs down. It also offers better protection than many other packing materials, thanks to its coarse texture, durability, and flexibility. Kraft papers used in multiple ways across the globe because of these including:
Paper sacks for industrial materials such as cement and chemicals
Flour and food bags at the grocery stores
Multiwall sacks
Envelopes
Paper bags
Corrugated layered cardboard
When unbleached, you can find it most often as a wrapper or packaging material. Kraft paper makers can make products that are watermarked, striped, or calendared and kraft paper can be printed on as well.
Brown kraft paper is normally made from unbleached kraft pulp. A white kraft paper, by contrast, is normally made from bleached kraft pulp. Since bleaching weakens paper, kraft papermaking companies make their strongest products in the natural brown colour.
